Not really any surprises in my opinion, except for Dishonored 2 winning best action/adventure game, don’t get me wrong it’s great, but that’s a fucking stealth game.  Overwatch/Blizzard cleaned up, don’t know too much about eSports except a few Smash Bros players, but assume that was no surprise here.  Inside from Playdead was another one which won a few, although I haven’t gotten around to it myself it appears this was well deserved.

How Was The Show?

In a word, shite.  The pacing was terrible and there were far too many ads shoehorned in, I get these ads pay for the awards show and they keep the lights on but there must be a more delicate way.  That being said, it had its moments, Nolan North’s acceptance speech raised awareness of the voice actor strike which is going down now, he simply addressed the fact that the developers’ jobs is far more important than his and his fellow voice actors who are on strike should think about it.  That Dragon, Cancer won Games For Impact award and gave the most heartfelt acceptance speech you’ve ever seen (below).

One of my favourite moments from the whole show, if not favourite was when Mick Gordon, music producer who did the DOOM soundtrack performed it live at the Game Awards with an 8-string guitar and in drop C or G or some shit and it was fucking awesome.  He looked like he was having a blast up there (below).

Reveals

The only two thing you needed to care about which got air time at the Game Awards are Death Stranding and Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Starting with Death Stranding, this looks like it’s going to be a fucking awesome psychological thriller, with Gullermo Del Toro and Mads Mikkelsen joining the cast.  The only downside is that I fear it’s getting oversaturated and fear that they are showing too much, this game is winter 2018 at the earliest you’d imagine so as much as I’m intruiged I wish they would leave it alone for a bit and go and make their game.

And Zelda, well Zelda looks sick as first suspected.  Zelda games have a history of being delayed and delayed, but they are usually always good so it’s fine.

FINAL SUMMATION

I appreciate award shows which champions game creators, I think it’s a step in the right direction if we want games to be taken as a serious art form.  But we can do better than this, I’m not asking for a show as glamorous as the Academy Awards or anything but come on, slow pacing, unfunny jokes about a razor robot or whatever the fuck that thing was, some of the pops were good, like Zelda and Death Stranding and it was a pleasure to see Kojima finally win last years award, deservedly.  I just hope it feels more fluid next year.

PS. Bring on Zelda!!

WheelJack xoxo
