I’ve always wondered just what is the best Christmas game? And do they even exist? I don’t mean Christmas games as in the Christmas event in Overwatch or the exclusive items in Rocket League or whatever, I mean actual Christmas games.
And of course there is one out and out winner is quite clearly… The Grinch on PSOne.
I kid, of course… It’s Bayonetta 2, and that’s the end of it.
I can see your face, puzzled as to why a game where an umbra-witch fights off Angels with pistols and big spear-like weapons? Listen to me, if Die Hard is a Christmas film, then Bayonetta 2 is a Christmas game. Die Hard is a great film set on Christmas Eve which gives it a Christmas feel and it’s the opposite of what a Christmas film usually is, some happy la de da nonsense, like The Santa Clause and Miracle on 34th Street and all that shit. They’re aren’t many Christmas games that fit into this kind of feel to start with, like The Grinch game and Santa Clause Saves the Day or whatever it is, both on PSOne respectively.
That’s where Bayonetta 2 comes in, set in the manic stages just before Christmas the game’s prologue starts with Enzo and Bayonetta Christmas shopping (Rodin and Jeanne are also there) when a gang of Angels attack the city and that’s pretty much where the Christmas theme starts and ends, well, there’s another nod to Christmas at the end of the game.
(If you’ve got 5 minutes, watch the prologue)
There’s not much Christmas themed in the main bulk of the game but I still stand by this counts as a Christmas game, with Die Hard being a Christmas film and all. The fact that Bayonetta 2 is arguably the best game in it’s genre is a bonus, the combat is by far one of the most fluid experiences you can have in a hack n slash game and it’s so satisfying and the set pieces are out of this world. The fact you can dress Bayonetta up in Nintendo outfits like Samus, Peach and Daisy is a nice touch, it’s also one of the best games on the Wii U and there aren’t many of those.
I’m not going to get into the whole fiasco of the game being borderline mysogonistic, quite a lot of people believe that the Bayonetta character is treated poorly and over sexualised especially when she’s performing her signature moves, that’s a conversation for another day. The fact it’s a video game with a female lead is a rare feat, she’s a strong character in her own right and at times I was flabbergasted this was a Nintendo exclusive.
I’m glad there aren’t a lot of actual Christmas games, the thought of delivering presents and magical fairy dust makes me want to vomit, but if you haven’t already and are one of the 5 people who actually paid money for a Wii U then you should definitely (DEFINITLEY!) check out Bayonetta 2. It’s fucking awesome.
Anyway, I hope everyone reading this had a good Christmas and all the best for 2017.
I might do my Top 5 games of 2016 soon. If I can be arsed 😉
