So, it finally comes down to this, after months of nonsensical rumours and conjecture with little to no evidence provided, The Nintendo Switch Reveal will happen Friday 13th @ 4am (for me in the UK anyway). It appears Nintendo failed to get the bad news out of the way first but hey ho, here’s seven predictions on what I feel will go down at the event.
I have no rules, just try and keep your predictions off the track, like no predicting Nintendo will make a new Mario game at some point in the next 20 years.
Release Date – March 17th Worldwide
This has been rumoured for a while and I believe it, it makes sense to slap it here after delaying it from 2016, this will be one of the first pops, there’ll be a sizzle reel and BOOM, March 17th 2017 will flash on the screen with something like “Pre-Order directly after this presentation” or a specific time on the Friday.
Price – £250 with a “premium bundle” available
Also a pretty early announcement for the event, if Nintendo have to get one thing right with the Switch for it to be a success then it’s the price, I think the Wii taught us that. I think £200 is the bargain option, as cool as this price would be I would start to question the authenticity of the product and I think that would be another nail in the 1st party Nintendo we know today. £250 is the sweet spot for their new hardware and it isn’t too much different than it’s nearest competitors so that’s the price they’ll try to go for.
I genuinely believe there will be a premium bundle for £300-£400 which will include a pro controller, a game, bigger internal storage etc. for the “hardcore” crowd such as myself. Any higher than this then we also have a problem, it will be too expensive.
Zelda at Launch, Mario in the Fall
As easily as this prediction could be reversed I think Nintendo feel they have been too long with Zelda and they need it out as soon as possible, so with the rumours that the new Mario Switch game is further along than we first thought, it has to be Zelda at launch and Mario in the fall. There’s nothing else that really makes me feel that this is a dead cert, they could release Mario whenever the fuck they want and it would sell a shit load.
Mother 3 FINALLY Gets Localised for the West
A massive announcement to a niche set of individuals. A game that never saw the light of day outside of Japan but people have been trying to get it officially localised for years seeing as it was first released on the Game Boy Advance in 2006. There was a rumour a few weeks ago that the development team will be at the event and now seems like the perfect time to release this. Will be available at launch.
Gamecube Virtual Console Announcement
A console that is very near and dear to my heart, the first video game console I bought with my OWN money. The Gamecube will finally make it’s way onto the virtual console and you’ll be able to play the games at launch but there won’t be that many games, maybe 2 or 3. The games? Super Mario Sunshine and Luigi’s Mansion with Super Smash Bros. Melee and Wave Race Blue Storm coming at a later date, or something like that.
Here’s another shout, you’ll be able to use the gamecube controller adapter which was bundled with Super Smash Bros. For Wii U… Well, it is one of the best controllers ever made, and you can take that to the bank.
Yep, I know this is a bold shout for a company as protective as Nintendo but I genuinely believe the Switch will be region free, I almost think it has to be. If the Switch is going to reach it’s potential then Nintendo need to aim this thing towards the commuter or somebody who goes on abroad a lot and what perfect way to do that by making it region free? Take your Switch with you to the States and not have to worry about buying games. Buy what you want, it will play from anywhere.
That being said, I don’t think the eShop will be region free, that’s just too good to be true.
It’s time for Nintendo to join us here in the 21st Century and of course that means putting pointless trophy lists of some sort in their games. Whatever stick you wanna give Nintendo I honestly believe they have been listening this time but I think they’ve probably been wearing their Nintendo filter ear muffs, so we’ll probably have some My Nintendo cross over nonsense but it’ll be a step in the right direction.
It will be available from the get go and we will be on our way to a fully achievemented NES to N64 library which means you’ll never see me again.
For the first time in a long time I can see the good in Nintendo, whether they get the shit filter and filter out all the bad stuff is a different story. The CEO of Nvidia made a statement saying that we would be “blown away” by the Nintendo Switch, I’d take that with a pinch of salt, his company’s chips power this thing, for him to not support it would be the equivalent of me making you a sandwich and saying, “It’s pretty shit to be honest.”
I hope they succeed because a healthy Nintendo is good for the games industry, that being said I do have a few honourable mentions which go from obvious to shout of the century…
Zelda Wii U delayed… Slightly, Mario Kart 8 & Splatoon will be available in the launch window, Super Smash Bros. For Switch will be announced along with 2 new characters , Skyrim and Just Dance are launch titles, Mario and Rabbids RPG will be revealed, titled and have a release date of the summer, A Tease for Beyond Good and Evil 2 (no gameplay), Dragon Quest XI will be shown running on the Nintendo Switch LIVE on stage, Nintendo will save Metroid Switch for E3.
And one last thing…
Wild Card: F-Zero Switch
Oh how I long for a new F-Zero game, it’s been 13 years and there is still no sign of it. Hopefully, HOPEFULLY Nintendo can sort us out with a new F-Zero game, I’ll take a HD remaster of F-Zero GX. That being said F-Zero GX is one of Gamecube’s best games so that wouldn’t particular be a bad thing.
Looking forward to this, not so much the 3:45am alarm…
